The Incredible Training Behind Jeremy Allen White’s Convincing Culinary Skills on The Bear

In “The Bear,” Jeremy Allen White’s portrayal of Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto, a chef with experience in Michelin-starred kitchens worldwide, is remarkably convincing. The secret lies in the rigorous culinary training the cast underwent before filming the newest episodes.

Courtney Storer, the show’s Culinary Producer, shared a video showing White and Lionel Boyce, who plays pastry chef Marcus Brooks, mastering cooking techniques under the guidance of top chefs. Brian Lockwood, formerly of The French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park, taught White how to create savory dishes like ravioli from scratch. Boyce received a pastry masterclass from Malcolm Livingston II, who worked at renowned restaurants like wd~50 and Noma.

The actors meticulously mimicked the chefs’ movements, learning intricate skills like pouring wine, wiping down chopping boards, piping with precision, and separating eggs. The video culminated with the stars showcasing their beautifully plated, restaurant-worthy dishes, earning praise from the culinary community for the show’s authenticity.

White and co-star Ayo Edebiri trained extensively at the Institute of Culinary Education and Michelin-starred restaurants like Pasjoli. White spent hours perfecting his omelette technique, going through over 100 eggs and plating up around 120 omelettes. The dedication to their craft is truly impressive, ensuring “The Bear” captures the essence of the culinary world with remarkable accuracy.
